FAQs – We Answer Your Questions
What are the advantages of renting a safe deposit box?
Knowing your valuables are securely stored brings real peace of mind — whether confidential documents, important data or personal belongings.
The self-service high-security safes at Coburg Tresor offer private and business clients maximum security, discretion and flexibility. Located in central Vienna, your personal safe deposit box is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Renting a box is quick and straightforward.
What items can I store?
You can store important documents, securities, jewellery, data storage devices, precious metals, cash or personal keepsakes.
Not permitted are perishable items, (fire-)hazardous goods, or any items whose possession, use or storage is prohibited by law.
The maximum load per box is 20 kg.
How is my personal data processed?
To rent a safe deposit box, we require the personal data necessary for the contract and a copy of an official photo ID. Your data is handled anonymously and confidentially (in accordance with GDPR) and is not shared with third parties. Your data is processed solely for internal purposes required to open and manage your safe deposit box. Neither the state nor authorities have access to your safe or the items stored inside.
How is payment for the safe deposit box handled?
The rental fee depends on the size of the box. Your contract is open-ended and only ends when you actively terminate it. If the contract is not cancelled, the rental fee for the new calendar year becomes due in advance on 15 January. If the contract begins during the year, the fee is calculated pro-rata. In case of non-payment, access to your safe deposit box will be blocked from 28 February.
Is a deposit required for the safe deposit box?
Yes. When signing your rental contract, a deposit of €250 must be paid.
You will receive the full amount back after terminating your contract and returning everything in proper condition.
How can I extend my contract?
Your rental contract is open-ended.
No contract extension is required — the agreement continues automatically until cancelled.
How can I cancel my rental contract?
Either party may cancel the rental contract with four weeks’ notice to the end of any month.
Cancellation must be made in writing by registered letter or in person by appointment.
For jointly rented boxes, cancellation must be declared by all tenants together.
What happens in the event of the tenant’s death?
If the box is jointly rented, the remaining tenants may either continue or terminate the contract. For any judicial inquiry, the status reported is based on the date of the request.
If the sole tenant dies, heirs must provide official proof (grant of probate, executor documentation, or inheritance certificate). Once Palais Coburg Tresor receives an official or court-certified copy, access may be granted to the legally recognised heir or executor with full legal effect.
Who is allowed to rent a safe deposit box?
Any person of any nationality aged 18 or older may rent a box. Multiple tenants may rent a box jointly — no family relationship is required. Each tenant must sign the contract and then has independent access. All tenants are jointly liable.
Authorised persons may have access rights, but they cannot influence or cancel the contract.
How do I open (set up) my safe deposit box?
After arranging an appointment, you will receive an on-site introduction — we will show you the facility and how it works. Any adult or company can rent a box.
To complete the contract, you will need your passport, Austrian ID card or photo ID (EU citizens). Companies require an extract from the Austrian company register.
Upon signing, the rental fee for the rest of the calendar year and the deposit must be paid. The deposit will be returned in full once the contract ends and the keys are returned. Please allow around 45 minutes for the contract process. Your safe deposit box will then be available immediately.
Anonymous rental is not possible.
How do I access and use my safe deposit box?
Using a special access card, a personal PIN and a physical key, you have access to your box 24 hours a day, 365 days a year — securely, flexibly and discreetly. Coburg Tresor is operated by Palais Coburg Hotel Residenz GmbH and is located in a dedicated area of the property. The hotel reception is staffed 24/7.
What sizes are the safe deposit boxes and what should I consider when storing items?
Coburg Tresor offers boxes in various sizes.
All boxes have the same base dimensions: 235 mm wide × 330 mm long.
You can choose from five height options depending on what you need to store:
40 mm | 70 mm | 130 mm | 190 mm | 250 mm
The maximum weight per box is 20 kg.
A full overview of sizes and prices can be found here.
Are my valuables insured inside the safe deposit box?
Yes. Each safe deposit box is automatically insured up to €35,000 once the rental fee is paid. Additional insurance can be arranged, with coverage available up to €1.5 million. An overview of additional insurance options can be found here.
What happens if I lose my access card or key?
Each tenant receives two keys. If a key is lost, the box must be opened in your presence after identity verification. The lock will be replaced with a fee of €250. We do not hold any third or master keys.
If you lose your access card, we will issue a new one on-site (after identity verification) for a fee of €25 and immediately deactivate the old card.
What if I forget my access PIN?
If you forget your PIN, please book a personal appointment. After verifying your identity, your old PIN will be reset and you can create a new one.
